| "I
enjoy painting what I really see. Houses are difficult
to paint because you have to get the structure
and perspective right. If not, the building won't
look as if it is standing up properly. A photograph
tends to distort the building because you have
to tilt the camera to get the whole building in.
The eye is more flexible, and can adjust the perspective.
"One
encounters certain difficulties while painting
outdoors but it can't be helped. I want to paint
from life because it is alive".

"For
myself, as an artist, the attraction of Penang is
the street scenes. They are always full of life
and are a constant source of inspiration."
"I
prefer to work in the street because I know that
to catch the real atmosphere I need to be there.
There is always some little gesture or posture
that I could never think of in the studio."

| "One
of my favourite spots is Love Lane because
of the houses there. There is always something
going on hawker stalls selling food, trishaws
passing by, people eating and drinking.
I record it all in my sketch books with
whatever comes to hand - pencil, charcoal,
ink, anything.
"My
subjects are the light and the local colour.
That is what makes Penang such an enduring
source of artistic interest".
