Biography

Ng Eng Teng was born in Singapore on 12th July 1934. Sadly, the artist passed away in his sleep due to pneumonia on 4 Nov 2001 at his studio.

He was widely acknowledged as one of Singapore's leading sculptor-potter-artists. His works not only break free from traditional conventions, but were infused with rich emotions which stem from the artist's deep reflections on life and human relations.

Ng Eng Teng majored in painting during his studies at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1961. He continued his art education at North Staffordshire College of Technology in pottery design between 1962 and 1963 and ceramics and sculpture at the Farnham School of Art in Surrey in 1964. He then worked as a designer at the Carrigaline Pottery in Country Cork, Eire until his return to Singapore in 1966.

On his return Ng set up a ceramic workshop and began teaching pottery-making. After a brief stint as a visual aids officer with the International Planned Parenthood Federation for Southeast Asia and Oceania, he marked his resolution to concentrate solely on sculpture and pottery by holding a one-man exhibition of sculpture, painting and ceramics in 1970.

The birth of Ng Eng Teng Gallery, on 18th March 1998, located in the heart of the National University of Singapore (NUS) was the result of a generous donation of 763 pieces of works by the artist. In the collection are some of his earlier and rarely exhibited paintings and drawings. The collection traces some 40 years of Ng Eng Teng's development as an artist. Ng Eng Teng made a second donation of 173 works produced between 1991 and 1998 to NUS. In the words of the artist, the donation is intended to "complete, increase and strengthen the present collection".
