Lim Tze
Peng was born in Singapore on 28 September 1923.
He was a pupil at Guangyang Primary School in the 1930s where
teacher, Hong Zongdi who was knowledgeable in Chinese classics
was his mentor in cultural values and practices. Lim Tze Peng
graduated from Chung Cheng High School in 1948. A teacher
by training and profession, he served as principal of Sin
Min Chinese School for about 30 years before he retired in
1981.
Although Lim Tze Peng began painting at Chung Cheng High School,
where he did Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy and oil
painting, it was only in 1952 when he took up painting seriously.
Lim Tze Peng has been travelling and painting diligently for
more than 60 years, moving amongst the different mediums,
oil, Chinese ink painting and calligraphy to capture the presence
of his immediate environment. The artist is renowned for his
extensive works featuring paintings of Singapore¡¯s
landscapes just before urban redevelopment.
Lim Tze Peng who also participated in many of the Southeast
Asian field trips in the 1960s, evolved a unique style of
ink painting. Using rich brush and tonal details, the drawing-like
descriptive approach is often regarded as a manifestation
of the Nanyang School in the ink medium. Lim¡¯s
works usually exude a quiet harmony and a subdued charm. .
