Biography

Madam Che is a famous contemporary Chinese painter who excels in figure and bird-and-flower painting.

Her figures are elegant and have the essence of the style of Liang Kai and Xu Yansun, while her flowers, birds and lotuses are extraordinary. She is equally skilled in calligraphy with her own distinctive style.

Madam Che was born in Beijing. Her father Che Qingyun was a well-known general skilled in painting and poetry, her mother Mao Shuen a graduate of the famous Teachers' College of Beijing who became an educationist.

When she was young Madam Che was an intelligent child and was widely exposed to a collection of painting and calligraphy. She started learning to paint under the tutelage of Xu Yansun, a prominent modern figure master.

In 1944 Madam Che enrolled in the Art Faculty of the Furen University where she benefited from the guidance of modern Chinese art masters such as Pu Jin, Pu Quan, Qi Gong, Wang Shensheng, Chen Yuandu and Lu Hongnian.

In 1949 she migrated to Taiwan to continue working on fine art. From 1963 to 1965 she taught at the Fine Art department of the Taipei Chinese Culture Academy.

She held her first touring solo exhibition in Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from 1965 to 1966.

In 1977 Madam Che's new work 'The Sound and Colour of Autumn' went into the collection of the Singapore National Museum. The same year she produced a programme on calligraphy and painting for the Singapore Educational TV. The film won a special award in an international education festival held in Tokyo the same year.

In 1980 she held her fifth solo exhibition, in which two works titled 'hibiscus' and 'peony' were picked by the Government Foreign Office as designs for Lunar New Year card.

In 1990 she held her sixth solo exhibition at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore.

In 1991 she held her seventh solo exhibition at the Teachers University Gallery of Taipei.
