Department of Interior Design

In 1983, the Interior Design Unit was set up under the Applied Arts Department and commenced a two-year evening part-time interior design programme. It started with one class of 20 students and 3 part-time lecturers at the former San San Campus at Sophia Road. The study during the early period was on basic skills in development working mainly on residential and small commercial projects.

Presently, there are almost 160 students attending evening part-time programmes following a revised syllabus with l0 very experienced professional interior designers as part-time lecturers.

The full-time 3-year Interior Design Diploma programme started classes in l990 with just 25 students. Since then, the student population has grown to more than 200 students. During this period, we have revised the curriculum on a number of occasions to reinforce the programme by introducing more theoretical subjects as well as computer classes to teach relevant software.

The present programme is a broad-based higher education serving national and regional needs and characterised with flexible programmes which are responsive to the needs of students and employers. It is dedicated to the development of the full potential of its students. We provide a conducive learning environment and a unique combination of specialized training helping students to develop into disciplined, career-oriented young interior designers.

With the establishment of the Multimedia Department in l997 and the acquisition of more computers, our interior design students will have ample opportunities to learn more industry-related software.

The continuous upgrading of our curriculum to meet the industry's immediate needs will make our graduates better prepared for employment, increase students' abilities and offer them better career opportunities in the diverse job market as well as options to continue their education abroad.
